The Kurzweil K2000 was the first synth to tote Variable Architecture Synthesis. VAST allows for a variety of synthesis including sampling, FM, additive, subtractive, and more. Its flexible architecture allow for new features to be added via software, and hardware can be expanded with RAM, SCSI devices, digital I/O, and sampling.
