The Sony TCD-D3 was Sony's first compact DAT portable. Just a little larger than an analog cassette recorder of the same era, the D3 quickly became popular for taping concerts (stealthing) and for project studios on a budget.
The D3 supports a proprietary multibit 32kHz sampling rate which doubles record time, along with the consumer 48kHz sampling rate. The unit features manual gain control with switchable 20db pad for high SPL live recording. The D3 supports absolute time code along with the ability to renumber, add, and delete start IDs. A model-specific rechargable nickel cadnium battery powers the unit for two hours, but must be removed and attached to the AC power adapter to recharge.
